Widge, a poor orphan with the ability to write in shorthand, is being forced to steal Shakespeare's play, "Hamlet" by copying it. When Widge is taken in by the actors and treated as one of their own, he is torn by fear of his master and disloyalty to his new friends. It is a fast-moving historical novel about a young man in Shakespeare's day.
